L'attorniamo le cime dolomitiche,del Pamagagnon del Cristallo,del Sorapis,del Faloria,delle Tofane ecc.
Situata ne punto d'incontro delle strade dell'Alemagna e delle Dolomiti,e importantissima stazione ferroviaria internazionale di villeggiatura e di sport invernale,con funivie,ottime attrezzature sciistiche (seggiovie e sciovie) e scuola di Alpinismo.
Le principali piste di discesa di sci sono quelle della Favoria,delle Tofane,del Druscie' e del Pocol,stadio Olimpico del ghiaccio,e pista Olimpionica di Bob.
Ma ha qualche importanza anche l'artigianato,dell'intarsio dell'legno,e del ferro battuto,della filigrana e dei merletti.
Assai nota e' la scuola d'arte,con ricca collezione d'arte moderna opere di:Di Chirico,De Pisis,Marini,Rosai,Sironi,Semighini,ecc.
Notevoli sono pure la parrocchiale barrocca,con pregevoli intagli ligno,del Brustolon,e della chiesa della Madonna della difesa,del XV sec.rifatta nel XVIII sec
Parte della popolazione parla con un dialetto Iadino.
Intorno a Cortina sparsi ci sono villaggi chiamati ville.
Neo boschi e nei d'intorni sono numerosi piccoli laghi.
Nel 1956 Cortina fu sede della 7°Olimpiade invernale.
